About

WS2812B LEDs integrate the RGB LED die and a control IC in a single 5050 package. Each pixel receives its 24-bit colour data (8-bit R, G, B) via a single data line at 800 kHz, then forwards the remaining data to the next pixel in the chain — allowing unlimited chain lengths with a single GPIO pin.

How it works
Each WS2812B pixel contains a tiny shift register. On reset, the first pixel captures the initial 24-bit packet, then relays all remaining data downstream. A >50 µs low pulse resets the chain for the next frame, achieving ~400 fps on short strips.
Use cases
  • Decorative lighting and ambient displays
  • Status indicators with colour coding
  • Wearable electronics and costumes
  • Persistence-of-vision (POV) displays
Limitations Requires 5V logic or level shifter for 3.3V systems. High current draw — 60 mA per pixel at full white, so long strips need dedicated power supply. Timing-sensitive protocol can conflict with interrupts on some MCUs.
